Week 14: April 2-8

April 8
A start of a next generation of Soltron robot. Designed to transport animals to AND fro other planets with the ability to leap on clouds and party hard with unlimited men, unlimited continues.

April 7
At Sal's industries they have been develop many good to have prototype. This robot has tin man correct with gorilla super fan. Oversized novelty foam hand extra special!!

April 6
From an earlier sktech January 5. Doi! Slapped on the photoshop colour sketch and I'm ready to paint that bitch.

April 5

There were three sketches on one page of my book independent of each other. I cut and pasted and multiplied etc a couple times and came up with this.

April 4
Dreams of a girl in a red rain coat. She's in her own dream too.

April 3
My obsession with clouds may never die.

April 2
Second Stage. The shape is much clearer but the background actually looks a bit worse. Going to finish this weekend. Watch for it.

Week 13: March 26-April 1

April 1
This is the first phase of a painting based on an earlier sketch from March 16. Just getting my values down with a bit of colour. Sloppy paint and basic shapes to begin with. Love that shape.

March 31
A sketch for a painting I've been struggling with.

March 30
This is the house right outside my buddy Flurvog's apartment. I was at his house to watch hockey bur he was late so I stayed outside and sketched this.

March 29
Imagine if this was your genie? I'd be like "aw c'mon".

March 28
After I posted that last drawing of Lia this dickhead Davie (as in the street in Vancouver wink) messaged me and said "quit it with this gay stuff! Get back to doing dragons attacking the Harbour Centre!!" So I did it in 2 minutes with a sharpie and posted on his comments on Myspace. He loved it so I guess I "redeemed" myself. Good exercise in quick thumbnail sketching (more to come with that).

March 27
Part of some design research.

March 26
I did this sketch the day after a horrible evening. My entire place flooded and destroyed my apartment along with 8 others in my building!! It was not my fault fortunately but shitty and stressful nevertheless. The next day I was exhausted and had some restoration guys at my place, so I took most of the rest of the day off by riding my bike down to Kitsilano beach and drawing the amazing trees down there. I should really find out what kind they are. I'm terrible for that.

Week 12: March 19-25

March 25
Another one of Lia...in action! Well, kinda. If you can call homework action. Straight A's for this smarty pants...

March 24
Needed some painting and skintone practice. Bit too purply in some areas but I nailed the drawing which is half the battle. The thumb really pops out so I'm proud of it. Acrylics, gouache on packing paper.

March 23
Shape study with shitty photoshop gradient. Don't know what I was thinking with that gradient. Love that shape though.

March 22
Shape study. Math and geometry are such metaphysical things to me. Math is so scientific and practical and yet on the other hand can be completely hypothetical and unnatural. My current paintings are exploring this notion but alongside other manifestations of the metaphysical, like ghosts and the afterlife.

March 21

March 20
Just playing around yet again.

March 19
I love this one. On myspace I posted a bulletin about it, describing his eyes as "boners". I imagine he's checkin' out some knockers or some tasty booty. Ga ga ga goy!

Week 11: March 12-18

March 18
This one is inspired by my grade 6 memories. The girls were starting to get so smart and developing in ways that made them almost seem like strange creatures, and all us boys could do was try to get their attention through ways that really didn't work. I'm still playing catch-up.

march 17
Doodles over breakfast and coffee, freehand with pen on blue paper.

March 16
This is a sketch for a painting currently in progress, more to come on its development!

March 15
Just playing with colours and water colour paper.

March 14
Disgruntled.

March 13
Playing with cityscapes. Jason Jagel is the master at this, he does some stuff that looks completely freestyled but with so much imagination and unity its hard to believe that it is. And his colours are retarded (good). Check him out.

March 12
Ha ha.

Week 10: March 5-March 11

March 11

March 10
Bubba

March 9
Cute Page as a joke for my girlfriend who was scared of the drawing below.

March 8
Clowns always win for scariness.

March 7

March 6

March 5

Week 9: February 26-March 4

March 4
Chinatown, across from the Lemonade Stand.

March 3
ShuttleCockRoach

March 2
This is a drawing I did from my head. A dog that can walk on its only two legs (upright) really does exist and may or may not be as creepy as the sketch I did. Youtube it!

March 1
Some sketches of photos I found in the newspaper. The girl on the left was just skipping along the beach in some travel ad. I made it bit more exciting, in a Lord of the Flies kind of way.

February 28
Snow Angels

February 27
This sketch reminds of the Daffy Duck space suit when he's Duck Dodgers. Used photoshop for a colour study.

February 26
Lia again, sleeping.

Week 8: February 19-25

February 25
David Cross and some fat guy??

February 24

February 23
A strange composite of images. My favourite part is the girl on her bike, I think I got the spooky feel just right.

February 22
More doodling and photoshop colour playing, rough stuff but fun to look at.

February 21
Some caricatures.

February 20 ^
This is me emulating Marc Bell's style. Just a doodle using some of the cartoony shapes he uses. He is one my favourite local artists fer shoore.

February 19 ^
Saw the Shins Live on this day...at work it was all about finishing a tourism brochure. One of the pics we were using was the this awesome one of a guy in huge leprechaun suit. He looked so awkward and the leprechaun so overly joyful that I couldn't help but love it. Here are my sketches of the papier mache head.

Week 7: February 12 - 18

February 18

February 17
February 16
February 15

February 14
This one's for Lia. Is it a heart-man carving her name in his chest jumping over a very small hurdle called Love? Yup. Oozing with allegory.
February 13
One of the most peculiar creatures I've ever drawn. Most people can't look at it for too long. And that's more than I could ask for really. My imagination is too much for some to handle. Sounds like a compliment to me.

February 12

Week 6: February 5 - 11

February 11
Toonin'

February 10
This is a colour study I did for a painting that was already in progress. I kinda hit a wall with it and needed to reorganize my ideas. It turned out great. Unfortunately I don't yet have a photo of it, but I will post it as soon as I do! Coloured pencils on bristol.
February 9
This is a skexi (sp?) from the Dark Crystal, great movie, shame the way digital animation is so overused. Sometimes those puppet creatures looked much more real than the polished new stuff. Just look at Star Wars. Of course it all depends on what you are trying to achieve. But if something's on fire, light it on fire! Don't computer generate the flames!

February 8
Russian Lion Tamer?

February 7
Spooked pt 2

February 6
Funny bored kid.

February 5
Spooked.

Week 5: January 29 - February 4

February 4
This one kinda sucks. Oh well. The lumberjack could be awesome redrawn I think.

February 3
On blue paper.
February 2

February 1
This is one of Herzog's photos that was in his show at the Vancouver Art Gallery. Still haven't gone to see that, but I got this idea from a pic in the newspaper. I drew in the knife, but in the actual photo the kid on the right has an imaginary one and the other kid is laughing not grimacing.

January 31
I have a tendency to entertain myself easily. I tend to think I'm pretty funny, it's terrible really.
Make up a story for this one...

January 30
More superheroes.

January 29
The Abasa Master! Check out abasaoptical.com for what this illustration was used for (and a coloured version and more!)

Week 4: January 22-28

Wow! Great week! I wish every week was this good. I'll break 'em down

January 28
This kinda looks like my boss. Not intentional whatsoever.

January 27
This is my girlfriend Lia, she has a nice long neck and great facial features (she's beautiful ok?!) which makes for a great model! There will be more of her. Coloured in photoshop.

January 26
My hand.
January 25
THIS GUY IS AWESOME! But you can see that, I just kind of drew him up, no story. Note that his chest "war paint" is a wierd smiley face with heart cheeks and nose, haha.

January 24
This is a fictional comic book character (I know I know it's redundant but not really, keep reading) invented by Michael Chabon for his novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. It's about these two jewish cousins who become comic book writers during WWII and their comic book is called the Escapist. Here are a couple of poses of him.

January 23
This was s'posed to be a "grad" shirt for a kid finishing grade 7. He thought it was too childish, so I'm gonna make it for adults and it'll probably be much more appreciated. Kids these days. Vectorized in Illustrator.

Week 3: January 15-21

Here's more! This was my last week in Aus, and when I got home. I was pretty stoked when I kept the momentum up when I got home from vacation. I haven't put any pressure on myself to make anything mind-bending and beautiful because this is supposed to be practice. It has stayed fun as a result, even with less time on my hands. All I think about is drawing and art anyways, even (especially?!) at work, but most of the time I'm drawing and sketching in a graphic design-y way while working, perhaps in spite of it! If I'm lucky I get to make illustrations for work which is always GTs. Sometimes I get some ridiculous drawings from letting my mind wander at work. Inhibitions seem far more distant in this caffeinated office daze, I wonder why that is?

PS: Remember you can click on any of the pics to look at all the horrible mistakes and chicken scratch line work! Then you can see what a hack I am reaaaal close.

Week 2: January 8-14

I am mostly trying to play catch-up right now so i'll kust keep posting my drawings and you can look at them in order without much interruption from me - unless they really demand it.

Enjoy!

January 12
January 13
January 14

These were all drawn while I was on vacation in Australia. Some while drunk (Jan 12-14), some while I needed to pass the time (Jan 9, 11). Jan 10 is of my buddy AC looking "sinners" ie: pissed, grumpy, annoyed, etc.

Week 1: First Entry!

Welcome to the first entry of my new blog! I never thought I would ever be a blogger but there's so much practical goodness in it that it seems like a waste not to use it. So here's the deal: my mission is to create one drawing a day, everyday, as a visual diary. I want to be a better artist so this is my way of keeping myself busy with new work and constantly playing, drawing, experimenting, and hopefully improving along the way. I started my "365 project" (needs a better name) on January 1st 2007. Sometimes I miss a day. If I do miss I make it a habit to do two drawings the next day and not get stressed out about it. The other goal is to see improvement, which I think is greatly important. I seem to have stacks of sketchbooks that just kind of sit there unopened most of the time with some real nuggets of good sketches. Keeping all these ideas visible and accessible via this blog allows me to be reminded of some of my ideas that would otherwise by distant or lost. So enough of this chatting! Here are some drawings...I will write about what the hell was going through my mind as well if there's anything remotely interesting about them...

And remember, all this work is copyrighted material and may not be reused, abused, stolen, or bitten in any shape or form. Get your own shit.
